If you listen closely, the wind still carries the stories of Merino sheep, long farm days, and barefoot runs through the veld. Before Eco Karoo Lodge became the sanctuary it is today, it was simply Knoffelfontein—our family’s 4,500-hectare working farm tucked away in the Bo-Karoo Free State.
Our roots are deep in this red soil. We grew up herding sheep, learning from the land, and falling in love with the silence only the Karoo can offer.
But something stirred in us—something wild, creative, and curious. What if others could experience this land the way we did growing up? What if they could trade city lights for sunsets over koppies, and car horns for a symphony of jackals, wind, and firelight?
And so, Eco Karoo was born—a love letter to the Karoo, written in stone, sky, and space to breathe.

The Lodge
Eco Karoo Lodge sleeps up to 12 guests in three beautifully designed standalone suites, each with two bedrooms that sleep four guests. Every suite has been perfectly positioned to showcase the breathtaking mountain landscape at every turn—because waking up to golden light spilling over ancient hills is part of the magic here.
Built completely off the grid and powered by the sun, our lodge is not just a place to stay—it’s a place to reconnect. To press pause. To marvel.
The Land
We’re nestled in the heart of the Great Karoo—an ancient semi-desert that covers a third of South Africa, steeped in time and silence. Here, travellers can explore 600-million-year-old fossil beds, endless rolling plains, and skies so wide they make your worries feel small.
It’s wild and wonderful—and it’s waiting.

The Adventure
Of course, it’s not all stillness. Eco Karoo has its wild side too. Guests can:
- Hop on a quad bike and tear through rugged Karoo tracks that twist through dry riverbeds and sandstone ridges.
- Hike one of our new trails and meet the Karoo face-to-face—sun on your back, veld underfoot, and maybe a curious kudu watching from afar.
- Or take to the skies: our newly built helipad is ready for those who prefer to make a flying entrance. (And yes, the aerial views are everything you imagine and more.)
The Journey
Whether you’re road-tripping to Johannesburg or heading to Cape Town, Eco Karoo is the perfect detour—just 75km off the N1 and 6 hours from Gauteng. It’s a scenic, soul-nourishing alternative to the usual stopovers. Think less Colesberg, more complete escape.

So whether you’re craving silence or speed, stargazing or sunrise hikes, Eco Karoo Lodge offers something rare: space to simply be.
Here, time slows down. The air gets clearer. And the Karoo does what it’s always done best—reminds you who you are.
